Cities of Night Photo Contest

Contest is now closed to submissions. See the finalists and winner.

To celebrate the release of Philip Nutman's short story collection Cities of Night, we're launching a photo contest.

What We Want

We're looking for the most subtle, creepy, evocative photo of your city—or any city—at night.

One you can't turn away from.

One that tells a story.

What You Win

First place winner gets:

  • Glory—your photo will be featured on the CZP website
  • A free, signed, limited edition hardcover copy of Cities of Night
  • Twenty-five postcards with your photo on one side and on the other a flash fiction story specifically written for your photo by Cities of Night author Philip Nutman

More than that, we'll be printing 100 postcards that will be available at the launch of Cities of Night in Atlanta on May 15, 2010 where the winner will be announced.

And CZP will take even more postcards on the road for as long as they last.

Runners-Up

Three runners-up will get trade paperbacks of Cities of Night.

How To Submit

You can submit via email, Twitter, Facebook or Flickr. You must indicate on all submissions the city where the photo was taken.

No more than 3 photographs may be submitted per person.

Deadline: All submissions must be made by midnight (EDT) on Friday, April 16, 2010 Monday, April 19, 2010.

Send your photo to czpcontest@gmail.com with the subject line "Cities of Night". To keep our inbox from overflowing, photos must be no larger than 1600 x 1200 pixels and 2 Megabytes or less.

Using Twitpic or other photo service, tweet to @chizinepub with the hashtag #CZPCoN.

Join the Cities of Night Contest Fan Page. Post a photo to the wall or photo gallery.

Judging & Announcement of Winners

Entries will be judged by CZP staff on the basis of creativity, photographic quality, and effectiveness in conveying a narrative moment.

We will then contact the 10 finalists and ask for:

  • Contact information: name, address, e-mail address, telephone number
  • A confirmation the photo is the contest entrant's own work and that they abide by contest rules and copyright regulations
  • A hi-res copy of the photo. Photos must be 1200px x 1800px to be considered.

Philip Nutman will then pick the winner.

We will begin to announce the finalists, one per day, beginning May 6.

The grand prize winner will be officially announced May 15 at the Cities of Night launch in Atlanta.

Rules

Legal Stuff

  • Though we are looking for disturbing and evocative material, we will reject blatant nudity or excessive gore. So PG-13 is OK, R might be a hard sell and XXX is right out. This is for public consumption, so we only want to push the envelope so far.
  • Materials that are hateful, or otherwise violate any laws are strictly prohibited.
  • CZP respects the original copyright and intellectual property. The artwork should be an original photograph taken by the artist. Use of a photo without permission is not allowed and will lead to disqualification.
  • The photographer retains complete copyright. As a condition of submitting your photo to the contest, you agree to grant CZP (ChiZine Publications and ChiZine.com) an irrevocable royalty-free worldwide license to reproduce and display the image, credited with your name as it appears on your submission, in print and on the web for the sole purpose of promoting this contest and similar future contests.
  • Photos violating the submission guidelines—e.g., too large, no indication of the city where they were shot—will not be considered and may be removed.
  • For those selected as finalists, failure to provide hi-res photo (at least 1200px x 1800px), sign the confirmation, provide contact information or reply in a timely manner will result in disqualification.

Technical Guidelines for Submissions

  • Only photographs in digital format may be submitted. Photographs taken using film must be digitized for submission. Scanned prints may also be submitted.
  • There is no minimum size for photos entered into the contest, but they should be large enough for judges to easily evaluate. Photographs submitted by email, Twitter, Flickr or Facebook must be no larger than 1600 pixels on its longest side, and 2 Megabytes or less.
  • The 10 finalists must be able to submit their photos in hi-res format (at least 1200px x 1800px) for final evaluation.

Note: ChiZine and ChiZine Publications staff members are ineligible for this contest.
